Throughout the next few months our Women in the Driver’s Seat series will feature a new female team member from within our global organization, highlighting their professional achievements, how they have overcome challenges in their careers and the advice they would give to women considering a career in the automotive industry.
Meet This Week’s Team Member: Sharon Page Broomhall, Managing Director/Hob-Sytner Tamworth BMW/MINI
"YOU make the difference."
What attracted you to the automotive industry?
I was lucky that a local automotive employer offered work experience which lead to me being taken on as an apprentice when I finished senior school.
What was your first job in the automotive industry?
I started in sales administration supporting all areas of sales.
What is your proudest professional achievement?
Becoming the first female managing director of our BMW division.
What motivates you every morning?
Knowing I can make a difference every day.
How have you overcome challenges in your career?
Don’t give up, if you have a plan and it doesn’t work, change the plan and adapt!
Looking back on the last decade, how have you seen the automotive industry landscape change and evolve to engage more women?
While women have always been a minority in the industry, through education of a diverse work force and the benefits it can provide, the industry is evolving. Forward thinking employers like Penske, with better environments in which to work, more flexible working, including work life balance for families and career progression make a huge difference.
What’s the best piece of career advice you’ve received?
People leave bad managers, not the company.
What advice would you give to a woman considering a career in the auto industry?
The automotive industry creates lots of opportunities, with women still a minority I believe this gives you an opportunity to stand out and make a difference. It enables you to experience new technologies in a modern and evolving environment but with people who really care.
What hobbies do you enjoy?
I have a dog called Charlie who is a Cavapoo and is 18 months old. I love taking him for walks. My husband has a small collection of classic cars which we enjoy when the sun is shining. And I like growing my own vegetables, it’s great when you just go out to the garden and help yourself!
